The Uppsala Programme for Holocaust and Genocide Studies commenced activities in 1998, and is today a European leader in research, education and community activities (programming) in Holocaust and Genocide Studies. When established, HGS was the first nationally financed university centre for research and teaching the Holocaust in Europe.
In Genocide Studies, the Programme has particularly deep expertise on the Balkan conflicts of the 1990's, and peace and reconciliation efforts there in the wake of the conflicts. In Holocaust Studies, Programme researchers and teachers have developed internationally recognized expertise in the development of pedagogy and teacher-training (continuing education and professional development.
The Programme annually sponsors the "Hugo Valentin Lecture", which commemorates the work and humanitarianism of Prof. Hugo Valentin, and brings an internationally prominent scholar to Uppsala for up to a week in residence.
The University has also internationally recognized competence relevant to its MA degree at the Depts. of History, Peach & Conflict Research, the Law Faculty, and more.
